What is #GivingTuesday?

#GivingTuesday is a global movement that encourages and multiplies people's good deeds. The goal is to celebrate one day around the world dedicated to the act of giving, whether it be food, money, time (volunteering), new and secondhand items, etc.

The idea was born in 2012, in New York City, as an alternative to Thanksgiving Day celebrations, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday, to motivate philanthropy.   It has since been celebrated every year, on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving in the United States.

GivingTuesday Puerto Rico has been celebrated annually and as part of the global movement since 2016.

The Tuesday after this weekend dominated by commercial sales and marketing, millions of people, organizations, and companies join together to support causes they believe in. This is done by donating (time, money, volunteering, food, clothing, blood, goods, etc.) and raising funds. All this is done in order to improve society through the action of GIVING to help others.

#GivingTuesday is also a day when global giving is driven by the power of social networking and collaboration.

#GivingTuesday connects diverse groups of individuals, communities, and organizations around the world with a common purpose: to celebrate and encourage acts of philanthropy and solidarity.

What are the goals of #GivingTuesday?

The main goal is to celebrate altruism, generosity, on a special day around the world, and to:

• Make people aware of the importance of Giving, of helping each other and how we can do it, both in our immediate environment and anywhere in the world.

• Make known the work and initiatives of social, cultural, educational, health, environmental and other organizations and foundations working for Puerto Rico to a committed audience.

• Mobilize the public and have them incorporate into their actions the different ways we can GIVE and HELP each other so that these actions continue to spread and multiply throughout the year.

Who can participate?

While the initiatives in Puerto Rico are primarily those of not-for-profit organizations, including large educational and health care institutions, anyone can participate!

Nonprofit organizations and foundations can join as official participants presenting an initiative/projects specifically for #GivingTuesday.

Individuals, families, social/civic organizations, public institutions and companies can all take part, in many in #GivingTuesdayPR.

You can commit to carry out some specific action associated with this day.  You can make a financial gift; volunteer; donate blood, food, secondhand items; etc.  Opportunities to take part are explained in further detail elsewhere in the website.

Is there a cost to participate?

No. #GivingTuesday is an open and free movement that promotes helping others. All the information resources on our site are free to use.

How does #GivingTuesdayPR work?

#GivingTuesday publicizes and diffuses  actions of solidarity and philanthropic initiatives which help people which are operated by non-profit organizations, so that the public is encouraged to get involved.

It is about effectively communicating and sharing valuable projects and spreading enthusiasm and a call for support through social networks and any other means available.

Can nonprofit organizations receive donations through the #GivingTuesdayPR website?

Yes, social benefit organizations can receive donations by linking their web portals or through a crowdfunding platform associated with the movement to the “mini sites” that they’ll each have on the on our website.

Bona fide nonprofits can solicit donations; recruit or put to work talented and trained volunteers; ask for gifts of goods, furniture, food, pet food, or even blood and human tissue - the things these social benefit organizations  need to fully and effectively do their jobs.

Donations made through the platform/web site go directly to the non-profit organizations themselves, through their own portals or through the donation platform of their choice.

Consequently , each organization is responsible for having an online donation platform. When you register your project with us, we will provide you with a link to the donation platform on the "mini site" created for your organization's project

Will #GivingTuesday Puerto Rico as a nonprofit entity also raise funds?

#GivingTuesdayPR is only a platform for dissemination, a space that seeks to give visibility and draw attention to this movement, and the organizations that participate and to the projects that have registered.

Donations to Support #GivingTuesday Puerto Rico’s work will be accepted, but are not the focus of the campaign by any means.

Who are the Promoters of #GivingTuesday PR?

In Puerto Rico the campaign is a joint project of the Alliance for the Development of the Puerto Rican Third Sector, a non-profit tax-exempt corporation, together with IMAGINE Consultores, LLLC, a local company created with social purposes, specialized in the procurement of funds.

The Global Movement #GivingTuesday was born from the team of the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact, a cultural center in New York that since 1874 has united people through the values of service and encourages them to help others.

Today it is a separate, private nonprofit corporation based in New York City with representation in over 100 countries worldwide, including Puerto Rico.
